Citizens for a Canadian Republic is
expanding its membership network to Halifax
by launching its newest chapter today,
Thursday, May 15.
The very casual pub gathering tonight at
Tug's Pub, in Halifax's historic Waterfront
Warehouse, is for supporters to meet other
republicans, learn about our strategies for
Canadianizing the head of state and, of
course, share some of their own ideas.
The chapter president, Jamie Bradley, is
excited about the move into Atlantic Canada.
“Opinion polls indicate we have at least the
same amount of support for ending the
monarchy here as in the rest of the country.
That’s roughly around 50%. Obviously, we
know that not everyone is the activist type,
but we hope Halifax republicans will want to
get involved in what we fully expect to be a
growing topic of interest in the years to
He also sees a parallel between Canada’s
evolution away from the monarchy towards a
home-grown alternative to that of the flag
debate of the early 1960s.
“In 1963 and 64, the nation was divided
along similar lines, yet, looking back, no
one can realistically say that it wasn’t a
defining moment in history. We see the
cutting of our constitutional ties to the
monarchy in a similar way, that someday,
it’ll rank equally in importance in the
building of our Canadian identity.”
