Toronto - A new national public opinion poll
contradicts the prevailing view that Canadians fear
discussion of the monarchy because it means opening the
constitution.
According to the poll, released on May 25th by Angus
Reid Public Opinion, "52% support reopening Canada’s
constitutional debate to discuss the possibility of
replacing the monarch with an elected head of state."
Only 32% were opposed.
The survey also revealed that just 33% supported keeping
the monarchy, while 57% either supported an elected head
of state or it made no difference to them.
Over two
thirds of respondents (69%) would like to see a Canadian
serving as Canada’s head of state.
These results are consistent
with polling data released on Nov 16, 2009 which showed
53% support for reopening Canada’s constitutional debate
to discuss the replacing the monarch with an elected
head of state. At that time 29% disagreed.

Un nouveau sondage national
contredit la convention selon laquelle les canadiens ne
veulent pas parler de la monarchie sous peur de partir
un débat constitutionnel.
Selon le sondage Angus Reid, en date du 25 mai, "52%
serait d'accord d'ouvrir le débat constitutionnel et de
discuter la possibilité de remplacer la monarchie par un
chef d'État élu" Seulement 32% s'y opposerait.
Le sondage révèle aussi que seulement 33% voudrait
garder la monarchie, contre 57% qui soit voudrait un
chef d'État élu, soit en sont indifférent.
Plus des deux tiers (69%) seraient en faveur de voir un
canadien en tant que chef d'État.
Ce résultat
concorde avec les données prélevées le 16 novembre 2009,
selon lesquelles 53% des canadiens voudraient ouvrir le
débat constitutionnel pour remplacer le monarche par un
chef d'État élu, contre 29% en désaccord.
