Prince Philip appointment shows severe lack of judgment
Toronto, June 11, 2011 - Citizens for a Canadian Republic is breaking its longstanding policy of avoiding criticism of the British royals by expressing its shock and bewilderment at Prime Minister Harper's decision to appoint Prince Philip as an honorary admiral and general in the Canadian Armed Forces.
"Generally, we take the stand that it's Ottawa and not the British Royals that's the obstacle to head of state reform in Canada," said CCR spokesperson Tom Freda. "However, on this occasion, we have to ask why someone who has often been referred to as arrogant, racist and sexist deserves such an honour in Canada."
"This is the same person," Freda adds, "who, when asked in 1976 what he thought of his tour of Canada, said derisively, "We don’t come here for our health.""
Prince Philip is also on record with the following quotations:
• To a British female sea cadet in 2010: “Do you work in a strip club?”
• To a British student in China in 1986: “If you stay here much longer, you’ll go home with slitty eyes.”
• To Australian aboriginal leader William Brin in 2002: “Do you still throw spears at each other?”
• On viewing a fuse box in a Scottish factory said: “It looks as though it was put in by an Indian.”
• To Paraguayan dictator General Stroessner: “It’s a pleasure to be in a country that isn’t ruled by its people.”
"Obviously, a Canadian with these kinds of black marks would not even be in the top 100 of a list of candidates for such an appointment," adds Freda. "Prime Minister Harper needs to explain to Canadians how honouring questionable British royals coincides with our tolerant values."

Toronto, le 11 juin 2011 - Citoyens et citoyennes pour une république canadienne met de côté sa politique de ne pas critiquer les membres de la famille royale britannique afin d'exprimer l'indignation et la stupéfaction envers la
décision du Premier Ministre Harper de nommer le Prince Philip en tant qu'amiral et général honoraire des forces armées canadiennes.
"De façon générale, nous sommes du point de vue que l'obstacle à la réforme du Chef d'état au Canada se trouve à Ottawa et non pas avec la famille royale britannique, convient Tom Freda, porte-parole de CCRC. Par contre, en cette occasion, nous devons poser la question à savoir pourquoi un individu reconnu comme étant arrogant, raciste et sexiste mérite un tel honneur au Canada."
"Voici la même personne, ajoute Freda, qui, lorsqu'on lui demanda ses impressions de sa tournée au Canada en 1976, rétorqua: "Nous ne venons pas ici pour notre santé."
Le Prince Phillip est aussi connu pour ces déclarations officielles:
• À une jeune cadète de mer britannique en 2010 : "Vous travaillez dans un club de strip-tease?"
• À un étudiant britannique en Chine en 1986 : "Si vous restez ici encore un certain temps, vous rentrerez un jour les yeux bridés"
• Au chef autochtone australien William Brin en 2002: "Vous vous envoyez toujours des lances l'un à l'autre?"
• En voyant un boîtier de fusibles dans une usine écossaise: "On dirait qu'un indien l'aurait installé"
• Au dictateur paraguayen le général Stroessner : "Quel plaisir de se retrouver dans un pays qui n'est pas gouverné par son peuple."
Il est évident qu'un canadien ayant ces fréquentations et mauvais antécédants ne se retrouverait même pas sur la liste des premiers 100 candidats à une telle nomination, ajoute Freda. Le Premier ministre Harper doit expliquer aux canadiens comment conférer des honneurs envers de tels royaux britanniques reflèterait nos valeurs de tolérance."
