Support for ending monarchy now at record high

Toronto, ON - July 2, 2009 -  A new opinion poll released on Canada Day reveals a steady upward trend for cutting our ties to the monarchy, our last colonial link to Britain.

When asked about the future of the institution once the Queen's reign ends, an unprecedented 65 per cent of Canadians thought the monarchy should also end. Only 35 per cent were in favour of Prince Charles becoming Canada's next head of state.

“We were frankly surprised by the depth of the desire to cut ties with the monarchy,” said Peter Donolo of The Strategic Counsel, the firm that conducted the poll on behalf of CTV and The Globe and Mail.

The figure shows a 7 percent jump in republican support from a 2008 poll that asked respondents a similar question.

Citizens for a Canadian Republic is repeating its call to the federal government to initiate an all-party parliamentary committee to discuss the future of the monarchy in Canada.

With now over two-thirds of Canadians against a continuation of the monarchy after the Queen, Canadians also need the government to reveal its contingency plan in the event of the Queen's death or abdication.

Toronto ON - Le 2 juillet 2009 - Le résultat d'un nouveau sondage, émis le jour de la fête du Canada, confirme la montée de la volonté de rompre avec la monarchie, notre dernier lien colonial avec la Grande Bretagne.

Lorsqu'on demande aux canadiens ce qu'on devrait faire de nos liens avec la monarchie suite au passage du règne de la reine Élizabeth, 65% des canadiens répondent que l'on devrait y mettre fin. Seulement 35% souhaitent que le Prince Charles devienne notre chef d'état.

"L'ampleur du désir de rompre avec la monarchie nous a franchement surpris" dit Peter Donolo, de la firme The Strategic Counsel, qui a entrepris le sondage pour la chaine de télévision CTV et le quotidien The Globe and Mail.

Le sondage indique une montée de 7% depuis un sondage semblable tenu en 2008.

Citoyens et citoyennes pour une république canadienne renouvelle sa demande auprès du gouvernement fédéral de mettre sur pied un comité parlementaire afin de discuter de l'avenir de la monarchie au Canada.

Vu que plus des deux tiers des canadiens souhaitent mettre fin à la monarchie, les canadiens ont besoin d'une stratégie qui permettra de la remplacer suite à la mort ou l'abdication de la reine.
