An Indigenous governor general is only a first step toward decolonization
Toronto, July 13, 2021 - Advocacy group Citizens for a Canadian Republic (CCR) welcomes the choice of Mary Simon as the first Indigenous person to be selected as Canada's governor general.
However, the group believes that if Canada is to seriously address decolonization, we have to stop acting like a colony and deal with why Canada, in the 21st century, still has a British monarch as our head of state.
Opinion polls continually say Canadians agree that this is an overdue initiative. In March, one national opinion poll indicated that only 16% feel attached to the British monarchy and just 29% are in favour of maintaining it.*
The other revealed that a majority (53%) of Canadians think the British monarchy is out of date and no longer has a place in the 21st century, and 43% think recent events show that the Royal Family holds racist views.**
If Canada is to move forward into a future where recognition of the crimes of colonialism are addressed, and merit, equality and democracy are reflected in the highest office in the land, Canadianizing our head of state should be at the top of the list of priorities.

Une gouverneure générale Autochtone n'est qu'un premier pas vers la décolonisation
Toronto, le 13 juillet 2021 - Le groupe de défense des intérêts Citoyens pour une république canadienne (CRC) applaudit le choix de Mary Simon comme première Autochtone à être choisie Gouverneure générale du Canada.
Toutefois, le groupe croit que si le Canada veut amorcer sérieusement la décolonisation, nous devons cesser d’agir comme une colonie et nous demander pourquoi le Canada, au 21e siècle, a toujours un souverain britannique comme chef d’état.
Les sondages d’opinion révèlent sans cesse que cette initiative est attendue depuis trop longtemps. En mars, un sondage national indiquait qu’à peine 16 % des répondants se sentaient liés è la monarchie britannique et qu’à peine 29 % se disaient en faveur de son maintien.*
Un autre sondage a révélé qu’une majorité (53 %) des Canadiens croient que la monarchie britannique a fait son temps et n’a plus sa place au 21e siècle et 43 % croient que les récents événements démontrent que la famille royale partage des opinions racistes.**
Si le Canada souhaite aller de l’avant vers un avenir où la reconnaissance des crimes du colonialisme est prise en compte et que le mérite, l’égalité et la démocratie se reflètent au plus haut échelon du pouvoir au pays, la canadianisation du chef de l’état devrait trôner au sommet de nos priorités.
